Bassadone-Clark Olympic Sailing Campaign

Dear All,

Hope you are all well and survived through the miserable bank holiday weather. Sorry for those who have been trying to get on the website, hopefully the problem will be solved shortly.

Turning up in Holland last week we had very unseasonal Spa regatta weather with 3 days of sunshine and delayed racing waiting for a light seabreeze to come in.  It was long days on the water but full credit to the race management in Holland who despite the light forecasts didn’t lose a race.

It would be true to say that we didn’t set the world on fire in Holland but feel that the elements that have been letting us down over the last month of regattas are on the way to being solved.  In a predominantly light wind regatta we felt a lot more comfortable with the technique and equipment changes we have made over the last few months and consequently had more consistent speed.  On Medal Race morning we woke up to blustery stormy conditions that quickly disappeared leaving behind an awkward chop and very light breeze, reminiscent of China conditions.  A second in the race saw us close the gap on the top 3 but was not quite enough to get us on the podium.

What happened in Race 10? The Breitling Regatta is famous (or maybe notorious) for not having general recalls, so often 10 to 15 boats are pulled out at the windward mark for being over the line and not returning on an Individual recall flag.  It makes it a very difficult regatta to start well at, especially as the surrounding countryside is so low making it hard to get transits.  Anyway in Race 10, along with about 4 other boats, we had gone back behind the line after the start but unseen by the Race Officer so got pulled out at the windward mark.  Luckily we had video evidence and went into the redress hearing with one of the International Jury as a witness.

We are now in the UK with all our attention on the Worlds. We have decided against doing the European Championships this coming week in favour of focussing on and preparing for the Worlds.

Hope you are all well and it would be good to hear your news.

Kind Regards
Saskia and Christina
