RTYC Younger Members at the Rolex Maxi World Cup: Day 1

Three younger members from the RTYC, Emily Parker, William Jackson and James Jaffa, were given the opportunity to join Lord Laidlaw and his professional crew onboard the RP 82 Highland Fling XI for the Rolex Maxi World Cup, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo.
Day 1
After three days of preparation and training Day One of racing was forecasted for heavy winds, making the chance of racing uncertain. With over 40 knots of breeze recorded overnight and high winds continuing into the morning, racing was delayed by two hours to see how the conditions would change.
With the wind dropping to around 15 knots racing got underway in the afternoon. With a north easterly wind the maxi racing class was sent on a classic coastal course through the Maddalena Archipelago. It was a fantastic race with the smallest of rain showers. Highland Fling charged home in a time of 3 hrs and 7 mins and took first place by 4 minutes on corrected time.
Looking forward to another great day's racing tomorrow.
