Cala Galera 2K report

16/09/2015

A Royal Thames Young Members team travelled to Circolo Nautico e della Vela Argentario in Tuscany, Italy, two hours north of Rome in Porto Ercole, for the 2015 2K Cala Galera Invitational.

Despite the thunder stormy forecast the famed Cala Galera weather held for all 3 days providing us with glorious warm and sunny sailing conditions, which allowed for 3 fantastic days of racing in the stunning surroundings of the bay outside the Tuscan town Porto Ercole.

The RTYC team got off to a great start winning their first 2 races against the eventual finalists, Serpentine, and Team Banana (Italians).  Over the 3 days the race committee did a great job completing 2.5 round robins in sometimes very light and shifting breeze as the thermals fought with the gradient wind. The team very much enjoyed the racing, and sailed in 14 races, which felt like a lot of sailing in a 3 day event.

The racing became very close and the positive start we had sadly did not continue, in some very challenging and competitive racing.  After a difficult final couple of day the team finished 7th, having very much enjoyed the racing and close competition.
