J/70 Members Training Day Report

31/03/2015

A select group of hardy RTYC members assembled on Saturday 28th March for the first outing in the new fleet of J/70s. This was despite forecasts of 20 knots and gusts of 25 plus.

Charlie Esse, along with his father Anthony, gave a most illuminating briefing, using footage from his headcam in Lake Garda, on how to sail a J/70.

Then it was time to venture forth and members were treated to an exhilarating sail rotating positions on the boat whilst being coached from the RIB and onboard by Charlie and their bosun Jason.

With the weather deteriorating it was time to return to Shepards for a debrief which proved to be wise given gusts recorded at Bramblemet of 40 knots later.
J/70 Off the Water Training
This shakedown session was a tremendous learning experience as to how exciting, but also forgiving, the J/70 is to sail.

The next members’ open day, for which there is no charge, is on Sunday 10th May at which Charlie has again agreed to run an on the water training day. This is followed by a high level training/coaching weekend by Ruairidh Scott, J/70 National champion, on weekend of the 16th and 17th May. The cost is £70 per day to include coaching.
