Mum's Bucket Final

18/03/2015

6 teams took part in the Final of the Mum’s Bucket 2014/15 series on Saturday 14th March. This is the Club’s annual random pairs team racing series, a format which means that all the teams are always in with a chance of winning, with positions and combinations  changing  throughout each race.

PRO David Arnold, lead the fleet to the West side of Queen Mary Reservoir, where a port hand square course was laid, a cool northerly, slightly shifty breeze of 12-15kts, and flat water formed the perfect setting for team racing.

Henry Arnold lead from the start, winning his first 4 races in succession, both Sarah Allan and Jamie Foot were also off to a good start, each winning 3 out of their first 5 races. The Flags’ boat, skippered by VC Bernard Kinchin demonstrated a healthy knowledge of the rule book, whilst Nigel Baker put in to practice some of the maneuvers covered in the Masters’ training days, and Richard Hill put up a formidable fight throughout the event.

The umpires, ably lead by Chris Simon, were kept busy with mark traps being set, boats being locked out carried off away from the finish line, and plenty of protest flags being flown, alongside some passionately vocal crews. The Race Officials, ran a very slick set of 12 races, meaning each team competed in 8 races, just enough to exhaust the crews and still get them home in time to watch the rugby.

Henry Arnold won every race bar one, where Jamie Foot and Sarah Allan managed to hold out team mate Richard Hill up the first beat, meaning that Henry and his team took home the Mum’s Bucket title, with Jamie and Nigel coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively with 5 wins each.

Many thanks to the Race Officals, umpires and all of the competitors who helped to make a fantastic event and a fun day out on the water.
