RTYC Academy at the Anzio 2K

The Royal Thames Academy team travelled to RCC Tevere Remo in Anzio, an hour south of Rome, for the 2015 2K Rome Invitational. This was the team's first 2K event (two boat, keelboat team racing with no spinnakers) on the growing European circuit including events in Tuscany, Antibes, Istanbul, Hamburg and Monaco.

Shifty and light breeze greeted teams on Friday morning, very challenging conditions for all teams in such a tight, tactical format of racing. After a slow start, losing 3 of their first 4 races, the Royal Thames team (skippers Fiona Hampshire and Phil Derry) hit their stride and won their final 3, beating eventual finalists Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Royal Cork Yacht Club in the process.

A fantastic dinner followed on Friday night at the clubhouse in central Rome, with all teams thoroughly enjoying the fine local cuisine and refreshments, before an early start to racing the following day. Unfortunately the morning saw even lighter breeze and significant swell, much to the competitors dismay, and racing only began in earnest after lunch. These frustrating conditions persisted for the remainder of the event, preventing the Race Committee from reaching the required race number by Sunday afternoon to validate the results of the second round, and leaving Royal Thames on 4 wins from 7.

So close was the racing that despite beating both finalists in Round 1, RTYC lost out on the three way tie for 4th position and finished 6th overall; with some races under their belts, the team will no doubt improve on this in events to come.
