RTYC Team Comes Third in the Morgan Cup

The Morgan Cup, widely regarded as the premier keelboat team racing event in the US, took place on the 14th, 15th and 16th of August at New York Yacht Club in Newport Rhode Island. The Royal Thames were invited as the only overseas team to compete along with 9 teams from all corners of the USA.

The event saw near perfect conditions with all three days sailed in 28 degrees and 8-15 knots of wind. The format consisted of a double round robin over the first two days which saw the Thames come out on top with 14 wins from 18 races including two wins against our BA cup rivals Seawanhaka and a good win against the NYYC 1 team.

Sunday saw the event progress to the knockout stages. The Thames were matched against the Newport Harbour YC team from California in a best of 5 semi-final. We made a pretty slow start going 2-0 down but bounced back to 2-2. Unfortunately a bad team start let us down in the deciding race and we lost 3-2. We then went into a 3rd place play off with Seawannhaka YC, a team we have a lot of history with, and a best of 5 series that saw incredibly close racing and some truly epic team racing which the Thames emerged from with a 3-2 victory.

Overall we were pleased with our performance, disappointed not to make the final but really satisfying to beat Seawannhaka which bodes well for next year’s BA cup. The team would like to thank the club and its members for its continued support and the opportunity to attend such a high level event.

Sailing for the Thames:

Andy Cornah, Sam Maxfield, Scott Millar, Jon Pinner, Katie Greenland, Bethan Carden, Sam Littlejohn, Alexa Schuller Pinner, Abby Preston, Kurt Kalberer, Emma Geary, Scott Herling.
