Russell Peters finishes 2nd in the J/70 class at the Warsash Spring Championships

A few words from Russell Peters about his experience in the RTYC J/70s. Finishing a very impressive 2nd overall out of a fleet of 24, Russell had a thoroughly enjoyable couple of weekends racing in the Club’s brand new boats:

‘Having just finished the Warsash Spring Championship over the last 2 weekends I just wanted to tell you how much fun I had as well as how well organised the set up is; Red Jet to Cowes, step on a brand new J/70 with sails on board , push off and race in central Solent against 25 one design J/70s with 3 or 4  excellent windward /leeward races, and head back in, step off the boat and go straight to the pub or Red Jet- fantastic!

The first weekend was pretty breezy, with shifty Northerlies, and we were a little slow in straight lines, but we managed to find more ladders than snakes, and so we were happy with 2nd overall. The second weekend’s wind was a bit more constant, which meant that boat speed was slightly more important. We struggled a bit more but still managed to hold on to 2nd. I sailed with 2 good mates (old but not quite as old as me) and a 14 year old on Saturday and my 12 year old on Sunday so we were a little light, however this just goes to show you don’t need 4 gorillas .

The only shame was that far too many of the RYS and RTYC boats sat on the hard. I really hope more members take up the opportunity to sail and race these pretty simple fast and fun one design efficient day-boats.’
