Younger Members' J/70 Weekend Report

Twenty-four YM sailors made the trip across to Cowes in perfect sunny conditions on Saturday the 30 May, ready for our first outing in the club’s brand-new high performance J/70 keelboats. Following a quick briefing in Shepards Wharf, we headed to the dock and were split into bow and afterguard teams. Charlie Esse and Jason Sivyer then gave a detailed outline of the boats and advice on how to sail them, as they really are very different animals to the J/80s.
We headed out into the eastern Solent, where PRO Richard Ambler set us a series of windward-leeward courses in 10-15 knots, with plenty of skilful asymmetric spinnaker handling required. In between races, Charlie and Jason leapt aboard each boat to offer some tips, which resulted in some very close racing, with four boats recording wins in the first five races.

With the forecast looking ominous for Sunday, the series came down to Saturday’s sixth and final race, a longer passage race from Osborne Bay to the mouth of the Medina. Charlie Lowe’s Boat 3 took control from the start, claiming the race win, and with it the series.
It was a shame to have to abandon Sunday’s racing, but every crew left with very fond memories of a great day on and off the water, and all were very enthusiastic about the thrilling J/70s. We can’t wait to head back for the second YM outing in September, hopefully under more auspicious skies for both

Our thanks go to the sailing office, particularly Sarah for helping to organise the event, Richard for all his help as PRO, and Becci for sorting out all the admin. We would also like to thank Jason Sivyer and Charlie Esse for their invaluable coaching.
