Royal Thames members and Olympic Champions Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark were named as Rolex World Sailors of the Year at the awards ceremony in Barcelona yesterday, coincidentally at the same time as the Club’s annual Prize Winners’ Dinner.  Hannah and Saskia beat four other female Olympic Champions to the coveted annual prize.
 
The Club is immensely proud of our 470 girls and send them our warmest congratulations on their tremendous achievements this year.

The British Team under the flag of the Royal Thames set out to compete in the Lee Trophy and BA cup held at Seawanhaka Yacht club on Long Island, NY.

First up was the 12th running of the Lee Trophy, an event that the Thames has been a great supporter of and is one of the premier keelboat racing regattas in the US. 9 teams were competing, 8 from all over the USA and the Royal Thames team as the sole overseas club.

A wonderful weekend was spent racing J70s in the ever changing Solent. The streamline boats certainly didn’t disappoint and delivered a number of powerful races of the Blues and Reds, Thames and Squadron.
 
The teams arrived early Saturday morning on the reliable Red Jet and were greeted to hurricane flair braising conditions; the High Street turned into a flash flood river meanwhile the Sainsbury’s sign blew its own tack to the Britannica shop.

Prior to the World Championship, I was chatting to the 2015 World Champion, Jon McClean at RORC a few months before the event.  He told me that it had been a five-year programme for his team to become world champions in 2015.  This was going to be our first world championship in the Etchells and we knew that the standards would be high as the fleet included numerous Olympians, World Champions, Americas Cup, Volvo, Whitbread racers etc. - it was going to be hard but we were up for the challenge.  Also, we had set ourselves the challenge to take the Corinthian prize.

As a result of the success at the Gertrude Cup and the hard work and generosity of many individuals and the club, the RTYC Academy team was able to secure an entry to the Etchells Europeans and Worlds held out of Cowes. This was a fantastic opportunity for the team to go out and race in one of the most competitive international fleets during the pinnacle of their year.

​A team from the Royal Thames travelled to Newport, Rhode Island to compete in the 2016 Morgan Cup from 5th to 7th August. The Morgan Cup is hosted by the New York Yacht Club, and is America’s most prestigious three boat team racing event. They were the only international team invited to attend, after the Royal Thames hosted the New York Yacht Club at the Cumberland Cup in London in May.

The Royal Thames Yacht Club's Etchells Invitational Gertrude Cup was completed on Wednesday 3rd August after a nine-race program which saw incredibly close racing amongst the 14 teams competing, teams from 13 different yacht clubs around the world.

Like the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup the Gertrude Cup is an invitational event open to international teams who are each provided with a fully sorted and race prepared Etchells, each boat having matched sails to make the fleet as one-design and standard as possible. Now in its third year the Gertrude Cup is established as a key event in the Solent one-design scene.

While the cabin refurbishments being undertaken during August mean accommodation is limited there is still some capacity but is offered on a bed and continental breakfast basis only.  Please note that the Britannia Bar will now be closed from pm 5th Aug and reopens fully on Tuesday 30th August.  Limited stocks of beers and wine will be maintained in reception for occasional visitors to the Clubhouse.  The Secretariat will be manned throughout and the events office will be manned from 15th- 30th August.

The annual Clubhouse refurbishment works started on Monday 1st August with the ladies staff changing room in the sub-basement.  The main focus of the works will be the complete refurbishment of six cabins on  the second floor which begins on Saturday 6th August. Disruption will be kept to a minimum for those wishing to use the Clubhouse in August. Parking will be severely restricted throughout August and early September due to contractors’ vehicles on site. Members are requested to avoid bringing vehicles to the Clubhouse during this period as parking cannot be guaranteed.

24 Younger Members braved early mornings to head over to Cowes on Saturday for the annual Solent keelboat weekend.

This is the first year in which the event has coincided with the Cumberland Regatta, and as such the YMs ran the racing ourselves.  It also afforded the opportunity for members of all ages to socialise in Cowes, as the Rear Commodore Sailing kindly extended an invitation to enjoy drinks aboard his yacht, Kirima, after racing on Saturday.

There was a record turnout this year with 17 yachts booked in for the annual Cumberland Regatta. On Friday 17th June 60 + members congregated at the newly converted Sugar store at Shepards Wharf for a Paella evening where the CSO handed out the Sailing Instructions for the following days' two events.  Many of those attending berthed their yachts at Shepards.

A Royal Thames team consisting largely of Academy members headed to the Circolo della Vela Anzio (Anzio Yacht Club) for the 2016 edition of the Rome 2 Keelboat (‘2K’) Team Racing event over the weekend of 27th - 29th May. With a mixture of experience and new faces to the 2K circuit, the Royal Thames team were looking to hone their skills in this exciting format of team racing. Two Royal Thames teams travelled north to compete in the 2016 edition of the Wilson Trophy, over the weekend of 13th-15th May. Hosted every year by West Kirby Sailing Club on the Wirral, ‘The Wilson’ is the most prestigious event in the Team Racing calendar. Royal Thames Blue consisted of the Academy team who had placed second at the UKTRA National championships in March, whilst Royal Thames Red also boasted three Academicians in their ranks.

Light and fickle winds made for an AP signal this morning, the initial conditions proved a tricky obstacle for teams and race management, but as soon as the wind picked up and the racing was underway, there was no stopping the race management team, as PRO Jo Lucas packed in the races, Jo commented: ‘This morning was a little challenging, but this afternoon was beautiful, and the sailors were well behaved too!’ After 3 days of sailing, 60 races have been completed.

For the second day in a row, the conditions were absolutely perfect for team racing, Queen Mary Reservoir delivered a cracking 12kts of Southerly breeze and glorious sunshine for RTYC’s Cumberland Cup, meaning that the competitors, Race Management team and Umpires enjoyed a fantastic time on the water in the Club’s fleet of matched J/80s.

The British Sailing Team have announced the final four names for the Olympic Games in Rio this year, making the team selection complete.

The first group of sailors was announced back in September with further names being added in March and this week’s announcement completes the 15-strong sailing line-up that will head to Rio 2016.

On Saturday, 20th February, after much deliberation over a forecast showing wind speeds of 12 - 30 knots, a dozen hardy Younger Members met up at Queen Mary to take part in the first YM sailing day of the year. The Race Committee, aware of the forecast for the wind to build, made the decision to hold a morning session of one lap, port-hand box fleet races.

Usually a celebration of US independence, this 4th July will see the British sailing community come together in London to celebrate the sailors of the Olympic and Paralympic teams striving to sail for gold at Rio 2016.
 
The Sail for Gold Ball, held only in each Olympic year, serves as both a British Sailing Team fundraiser and a celebratory send-off for the selected Games sailors, this time on their way to Rio in pursuit of gold in their respective 10 Olympic and three Paralympic events.

RTYC has pontoon moorings in the Hamble which are located near the entrance to the River Hamble, and provide economical and private permanent berths for members. There are currently two spaces available on the pontoon for the season running from 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2017. Prices for the year are £220.00 per metre LOA for the Fairway side, and £229.00 pm for the Hamble side.
