Autumn Excuse Report

22 members and their guests gathered at Amabi restaurant in Shepards Wharf, Cowes on Friday 14th for a most convivial supper prior to the sailing event of the Autumn Excuse while the shooting and golfing members gathered at the On the Rocks restaurant in Yarmouth.
Saturday started bright and sunny and unseasonably warm but with almost no breeze.  4 yachts motored out to the start ready for the 11 start but the CSO delayed the start until 11.30.  At that point the breeze started to fill in nicely and fleet got away to a clean start.  At the first turning mark, Prince Consort off Cowes, the first yacht round, John Westlake’s Polar Bear III managed to get away under spinnaker ahead of a large tanker departing Southampton.  From this moment there was no catching him with the strong Spring ebb tide under all the boats the race to Yarmouth was completed in just under two hours by all the yachts in glorious sunshine and 12 knots of breeze.
Shortly after arrival in Yarmouth harbour the heavens opened once again proving that the Autumn Excuse sailing always seems to be blessed with the best of the weather.
A very enjoyable evening was held at the Royal Solent where the shooters, golfers nad sailors joined up for drinks and dinner together and on Sunday everyone departed for home ports
