RTYC Academy win silver at UK Team Racing Nationals

16/03/2016

A team of Academicians, Royal Thames Blue, finished second at the recent UK Team Racing Association National Championships, held in Firefly dinghies at Bough Beech Sailing Club over the weekend of 12th/13th March.

After light winds forced cancellation of Saturday’s racing, RTYC Blue burst out of the blocks on Sunday morning to win all of their group stage races and qualify for a Gold League brimming with quality team racers. With the breeze increasing to a perfect force 4, the team capitalized on good boat speed and consistent tactical nous to take 6 out of 7 wins, including a finish line win over the hot favourites West Kirby Hawks, to reach the final.

Waiting for them were the Birdham Bandits, a strong team based at Itchenor SC who had gone unbeaten for the whole event. And so it proved in the final, where they showed fantastic teamwork to beat RTYC Blue over the finish line in two races, despite some strong starting from the Royal Thames team. Nevertheless, the Academy were delighted with their performance at one of the season’s premier team racing events.

Numerous RTYC Academicians featured throughout the results, with Claire Lasko, Ben Gratton and Ben Rahemtulla also making it onto the podium in third (under the guise of Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society). RTYC Red meanwhile, featuring Academicians Phil Derry, Lottie Rapson and Thea Crawshaw, also qualified for the Gold league, eventually finishing in sixth from a strong field of 25 teams.

RTYC Blue add their Silver medals to those they won at the Cam Cup several weeks previously, where they placed second to West Kirby SC. They are now looking forwards to the season’s second and final blue riband event - the Wilson Trophy at West Kirby SC in May.
