RTYC J/70 Southern Area Championships Report

24/05/2016

19 boats participated in the inaugural RTYC J/70 Southern Area Championships. This event is designed to offer windward leeward, back to back fleet racing for a fleet which is rapidly becoming one of the most successful classes in the Solent. The second event of its kind will be run by RYS on 9th and 10th July.

The standard of the sailing was high, and with Saturday’s course being laid towards Lepe Spit, with 5kts of tide running up and down the course, competitors had to keep their wits about them and be tactically aware at all times. There were gusts of up to 20kts, meaning that the fleet had exciting downwind legs, with a couple of broaches taking place.

Simon Ling and the RAF Benevolent Fund were the overnight leaders of the event with two race wins and one second place.

Sunday’s conditions were vastly different to Saturday’s, with 0-1kts of continuously shifting breeze in the Central Solent. The Race Management team and the sailors’ patience was tested as they waited for the forecast sea breeze to fill in, and when it finally arrived, a calm 4-8kts blew from the South West. The PRO managed to get in two races, with RTYC and RYS member Russell Peters winning both of them, and Simon Ling taking second place in the first, and Jack Davies finishing second place in the final race of the regatta.

It was a closely fought event with the top two boats scoring equal points once a discard had been applied. It was only via countback that Russell Peters came out as the overall winner.

It is fantastic to have large fleet one design racing in one of the premier sailing venues in the world. We wish RYS the best with their event in July, and we look forward to hosting the J/70s again soon.
