RTYC Members Selected for Team GB at Rio 2016

Congratulations to RTYC Members Hannah Mills, Saskia Clark and Ben Saxton who have all been selected to represent Team GB in the Rio Olympic Games 2016, starting in just under 150 days’ time.

Hannah and Saskia were among those announced in September 2015 by the British Olympic Association (BOA) as the first athletes to officially join Team GB for Rio 2016. London 2012 silver medallists Hannah and Saskia are paired together again in the 470 Women’s class and claimed silver for Great Britain at the 470 World Championships in Israeli port city of Haifa in October 2015.

Ben will be paired with Nicola Groves in the Nacra 17 mixed multihull event, which also sees its first Olympic Games outing this year. The pair were Nacra 17 European Champions in 2015 and Ben spoke about the selection for Team GB: “I’m pretty excited to do two things towards the Games, one is get a medal for Nicola and I, and the other is to support the rest of the sailing team as much as possible. A lot of our foreign competitors are envious of what we have got but I think we’ve a good mix, with the likes of Nick Dempsey and all of his Olympics experience, as well as some youth and enthusiasm. We bring our own skills so I think as a team we will be able to do something quite special in Rio.”

British sailors have established a proud tradition of excellence in Olympic competition, having won 55 medals – including 26 golds – since sailing made its debut at Paris 1900 with Team GB topping the overall Olympic sailing medal table.

RTYC would like to wish Hannah, Saskia, Ben and all of Team GB Sailing the best of luck in the Rio Olympic Games 2016.
