RTYC at the Morgan

A team from the Royal Thames travelled to Newport, Rhode Island to compete in the 2016 Morgan Cup from 5th to 7th August. The Morgan Cup is hosted by the New York Yacht Club, and is America’s most prestigious three boat team racing event. They were the only international team invited to attend, after the Royal Thames hosted the New York Yacht Club at the Cumberland Cup in London in May.

Once again, the weather was fantastic with sun and wind on all three days. As always, the standard of the other nine teams was incredibly high, giving the Royal Thames team a great chance to race against some top teams ahead of the BA Cup in Seawanhaka in November.

Racing consisted of two round robins followed by semis and finals. All the races were closely fought, with most decided on the final beat. The Royal Thames won three races on Saturday, against Southern, Corinthian and ICSA All Stars. A mainsheet failure in another race, which the Royal Thames were comfortably leading, led to a re-sail against the Bristol Outlaws, which the Royal Thames narrowly lost.

In the second round robin, the Royal Thames posted wins against Seawanhaka (our opponents in the BA Cup) and ICSA All Stars. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to progress to the knock-out stages. However, the team were pleased that all the races were incredibly close and really glad of the opportunity to race in the Sonars ahead of the BA Cup.

The team would like to thank the club and members for the opportunity to attend a great event, and especially Mike Halstead for his ongoing support.

Sailing for the Royal Thames were: Josh Flack, Ben Gratton, Tom Hebbert, Arthur Henderson, Sam Littlejohn, Charlie Makepeace, Sophie Ormsby, Tim Palmer, Rachel Scarfe, Duncan Yeabsley, Toby Yeabsley, George Yeoman.
