Royal Yacht Squadron Ladies' Luncheon Invitation - 24th October

06/09/2016

The RYS would like to extend an invitation to their upcoming Ladies' Luncheon to our Members. The cost of the two course lunch will be £30.00 per person, including two glasses of wine.

The guest speaker will be Gilly Drummond who will be speaking on the multi-talented Mr Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown: his life and works. Brown, was born in August 1716 and the Capability Brown Festival this year celebrates a life of extraordinary landscape achievements and all that the designed landscapes of the 18th century contained – buildings, water, agriculture, forestry, shrubberies and for some owners such as Lord Coventry of Croome in Warwickshire and Lord Bute, the founder of what became the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, a vast range of new plants then coming into this country, many for the first time. Associated with over 200 sites, Brown achieved more work than any man before or since.  His is a fascinating story.

Gilly Drummond, has been a Commissioner of English Heritage, now Historic England, with a responsibility for historic parks and gardens and begun by initiating the very first county gardens trust in Hampshire, spurred on by the discovery of the Capability Brown plan for the present Cadland House. Chairing the Festival since 2013 has given her a rather larger canvas!
