Saida Cup Success

A large fleet of 21 Etchells entered the Saida Cup run by the Royal Thames Yacht Club on the weekend of 11th and 12th June off Cowes.

After a morning's postponement a nice South Westerly settled in allowing two races to take place the first being won by Andy Beadsworth and the second by Lawrie Smith.

On Sunday the south westerly breeze settled in almost immediately and so a full set of 4 races could be run in the form of back to back windward leeward courses of just under an hour each.  Andrew Cooper excelled in these conditions and won the first three and it looked as if he would have the Saida Cup in the bag.  However Andy Beadsworth, crewed by Simon Fry and Finn Hill, came back in the 4th race with a win and thereby won the competition overall with Andrew Cooper second and RTYC member Ante Razmilovic was 3rd. Ante was the first all Corinthian crew.

The closeness of the racing particularly at the windward mark was such that the judging the correct layline against the spring tide was critical.  One competitor reported arriving on the port layline at the top mark in 5 position but ending up rounding the mark third last after having had to duck the stream of right of way boats.

The Etchells fleet is back in excellent health after the disastrous Cowes fire, when 15 were lost, under the expert guidance of the class captain, RTYC member David Franks,  and the quality of the racing was praised by the competitors under Race Officer Phil Lawrence and the RTYC race team of committee boat and mark layers.
