Winchester Win the Belvidere Cup 2016

06/04/2016

The 2016 Belvidere Cup- RTYC’s school alumni match racing event- was held on 2nd April at Queen Mary Reservoir, Ashford Middlesex. The result was as follows, the winner was Ali Hall for Winchester followed by Abingdon (last year’s winner) and the RTYC Academy on the same score, Canford was 4th, Wellington 5th, Radley 6th and 7th Charterhouse.

The wind was mainly southerly but veering and backing 20 degrees on either side rising and falling between 4 and 12 knots. The conditions were clement that is to say sunny and about 14 celsius. A total of 1.5 round robins were sailed, with close sailing throughout.

Winchester beat Abingdon in the first round robin but in the subsequent lost to Abingdon. Abingdon beat the Academy in the first round robin and subsequently got beaten in the second.

The race committee decided at the request of some of the teams to make it a one day regatta with a dinner and prize giving at the dinner in the RTYC club house, which proved to be a roaring success, and all the teams were thrilled to receive prizes which had been carefully chosen by the race committee.

Ben Clothier of Abingdon was in charge of after dinner entertainment. He invited each team to recount a tale or to perform an act. Hugo Berney of Wellington must get a special mention for his rendition of Molly Malone, whilst Nick Hornby of Canford’s rendition of a flat Swing Low Sweet Chariot would not make any choir master happy. The Britannia Bar did its usual after dinner business with the diners being tended to by George.

Huge thanks must go to Event Manager and PRO Alexis Dogilewski and his team, as well as Chief Umpire David Lees and his team.

The 2017 Belvidere Cup will be held on Saturday 1st April.
