Younger Members Sailing Day Report

On Saturday, 20th February, after much deliberation over a forecast showing wind speeds of 12 - 30 knots, a dozen hardy Younger Members met up at Queen Mary to take part in the first YM sailing day of the year. The Race Committee, aware of the forecast for the wind to build, made the decision to hold a morning session of one lap, port-hand box fleet races.

In challenging conditions, the three boats contested five close races, with each team claiming at least one win. The final race proved decisive, with Matt Brien’s crew sealing overall victory by a single point. The undoubted highlight of the day for many sailors was the hot chocolate distributed at the halfway point.

Later, sat around hot food with a beer in hand, all agreed that they had thoroughly enjoyed the day’s sailing. Our thanks must go to Sarah Hornby for her tireless and invaluable work in both organising and running the event, Si Harding for providing match support, and Matt Pimm for volunteering as ARO.

Hopefully our next adventure, in Cowes in the J/70s on 18/19 June, will give us warmer and kinder conditions. Please sign up by emailing Sarah at
