Stockholm International Team Race Regatta 2017

A team from the Royal Thames YC travelled to Stockholm on Thursday 25 May 2017 to take part in the Stockholm International Team Race Regatta organised by the Gamla Stans Yacht Club
This was to be the third Regatta as organised by GSYS.
Following a Thursday afternoon practice, racing in earnest started on Friday morning on a round robin basis.
The PRO of GSYS was blessed with absolutely ideal team racing conditions.  The sun shone with a fairly steady Force 2 blowing down the harbour.  This enabled the PRO to run a series of three full round robins on Friday and Saturday despite the local Harbourmaster requiring the boats to be off the water by 4.15pm.
On Saturday night RCYC were triumphant.  15 wins out of 15 races. The standing at the end of the round robins was:-
1.    Royal Thames Yacht Club, RTYC, GBR, 15 wins (100%)
2.    Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, YCCS, ITA, 9 wins (60%)
3.    Royal Swedish Yacht Club, KSSS, SWE, 8 wins (53%)
4.    New York Yacht Club, NYYC, USA, 6 wins (40%)
5.    Gamla Stans Yacht Club,, GSYS, SWE, 6 wins (40%) (Same as NYYC but NYYC had won 2 out of 3 meetings.)
6.    Royal Yacht Squadron, RYS, GBR, 1 win (7%))
Sadly Sunday dawned with a bright blue sky but the wind had dropped to a Force 1 and shifted to the left and was coming straight over the docks for the cruise ships.  Shifts of up to  60 degrees were seen meandering their way over the water and there were more holes in the wind than the 4,000 to be found in Blackburn, Lancashire.
Despite winning all three starts convincingly, the wind gods favoured New York Yacht Club who had finished 4th in the round robin series and they went on to beat RTYC by 2 races to 1.
In the final New York Yacht Club lost by 2 races to nil to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Royal Thames came third by beaten the Royal Swedish Yacht Club a third place sail off.
The final positions were:-
. 1. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, ITA
. 2. New York Yacht Club, USA
. 3. Royal Thames Yacht Club, GBR
. 4. Royal Swedish Yacht Club, SWE
. 5. Gamla Stans Yacht Club, SWE
. 6. Royal Yacht Squadron, GBR
Despite the disappointment felt by the Royal Thames team, congratulations must be given to Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and to the hosts, the Gamla Stans Yacht Club, for once again putting on a truly great and enjoyable event. The sailing was for the most part sailed in excellent conditions. The social events were wonderful including a river trip on a steam launch, dinner in a local night club and dinner, accompanied by songs made up by each of the teams in a private palace.
