The Presidents Cup

26/04/2018

The Invitational was entered by clubs and academies from around the south of England: Clubs being represented were: Royal Southern YC, Royal Yacht Squadron, Royal Thames Academy, Frensham Sailing Club, Greig City Academy, London Corinthian Sailing Club, and the British Keelboat Academy.

April's mini heat-wave brought warm and pleasant but very light and shifty conditions to the sailors in their J80s and resulted in 7 close races with four separate teams claiming race wins on the day.

Frensham Sailing Club, helmed by Ben Hazeldine and boldly sailing only three up to save weight, made an impressive start taking the first race holding off fellow newcomers to the event, Greig City Academy in second.

Greig City Academy, helmed by Montel Fagan-Jordan, were the surprise package of the day and showed great consistency finishing in the top three in all but one of the races even holding off eventual winners Royal Thames Academy for the win in race 4.

Regulars to the event the Royal Yacht Squadron helmed by the tenacious Tom Preston had a mixed day but at times showed their class posting a first and a second.

London Corinthian, the first to sign up to the event, and late comers Royal Southern and the British Keelboat Academy fought valiantly throughout the day and certainly played their part in a fleet comprising high quality sailors and teams.

After a slow start finishing fourth in race 1, the Royal Thames Academy, helmed by Scott Wallis and with Academy veteran Tim Gratton running the bow, showed their speed, tactical skill and boat handling skills to post three first places and three second places to win the competition having seen of the challenges of Greig City Academy who acquitted themselves superbly to take second overall.
